From sweet seniors to playful pups, the shelter is overflowing with loving animals looking for their forever homes — and they need YOUR help.
The Babylon Animal Shelter, located at 80 New Highway in Amityville, NY, has just two open cages left — and the situation is urgent. With dozens of adoptable dogs, plus cats, kittens, and even bunnies waiting for homes, the shelter is pleading for the community’s help. If you’ve ever considered fostering, adopting, volunteering, or donating, there’s never been a more important time.

1. 🐾 Adopt a Pet (Today!)
If you’ve got room in your heart and your home, adopting is the most direct way to help. The shelter is filled with amazing pets — dogs, cats, and even bunnies — big, small, old, young, playful, mellow. All animals leave the shelter spayed or neutered, up-to-date on vaccinations, and microchipped. Each adoption opens up space for another animal in need.
2. 🏡 Become a Short-Term Foster
Can’t commit forever? Consider fostering. Even taking a dog or cat for a few days or weeks gives the shelter breathing room and gives the animal a break from the stress of the kennel. The shelter provides basic supplies and guidance — you provide love and care.
3. 📲 Share This Message Online
Help spread the word by posting the image above or this article to Facebook, Instagram, or your local neighborhood group. Tag @ILoveBabylon and @BabylonAnimalShelter. The more eyes on these pets, the faster we can find them homes!
4. 🎁 Donate Supplies
Running at capacity means more mouths to feed and more cleaning to do. While monetary donations are not needed (the shelter is funded by the Town), the following supplies are always in demand:
- Wet dog food only (no dry food needed)
- Cat food
- Towels and blankets
- Cat litter and litter boxes
- Cleaning supplies (bleach, paper towels, gloves)
- Treats for dogs and cats
5. 🙋 Volunteer Your Time
From dog walking to cat cuddling to laundry folding, there’s always something to do. Shelter hours are:
- Monday–Friday: 10 AM to 3:45 PM
- Saturdays: 10 AM to 2:45 PM
- Closed on Sundays
However, volunteers are needed — but there’s a process! If you’re interested in helping out, you can’t just show up and walk dogs or cuddle cats on your first day. To learn how to get started, email basvolunteers80@gmail.com or give the shelter a call at (631) 643-9270 for more information on volunteer orientation and onboarding.
6. 🐕 Talk to a Rescue Organization
If you’re part of a local or regional rescue group, the shelter needs your help. Transfers to rescue organizations with available fosters or adopters can save lives immediately. Please contact the volunteer team directly at babylonvolunteers@gmail.com to coordinate.
7. 🧺 Host a Donation Drive
Businesses, classrooms, scout troops, or even your own front yard can be the site of a supply or fundraising drive. Collect toys, towels, or cash and drop it off at the shelter. It’s a fun, community-building way to make a difference.
8. 💝 Sponsor a Pet
Can’t adopt, but still want to help one animal specifically? Ask about sponsoring a pet. You can cover their food, medical care, or adoption fee — and help get them one step closer to their forever home.
9. 🎓 Educate Your Kids or Classroom
Bring animal welfare into the classroom! Teach students about adoption, shelter overpopulation, or kindness toward animals. Some teachers even organize field trips or classroom donation challenges.
10. 🚗 Visit the Shelter — and Tell a Friend
Nothing compares to meeting the animals in person. Bring a friend, take photos, or even just walk a dog to give them time outside the kennel. You might find your new best friend — or help someone else find theirs.
