2 May 2023

Babylon Village, steeped in a rich history, offers locals and visitors a chance to explore the past through the Babylon Historical Preservation Society. Here, we present eight fascinating reasons to visit this treasured institution, which is dedicated to preserving Babylon’s heritage for future generations. The society is located at 117 West Main Street, Babylon, NY 11702, and is open on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm.

1. Experience the Babylon Village Historical Society Museum

The Babylon Village Historical Society Museum, housed in a building with a storied past, offers a glimpse into Babylon’s history. The museum property was donated by the children of Henry Livingston, who resided across the street and edited his paper, the Southside Signal. The museum was developed over fifty years ago and has since showcased Babylon’s transformation from its beginnings as Huntington South to the thriving village it is today.

2. Learn About the Rich Architectural Heritage Through Circa Boards

The Babylon Historical Preservation Society provides Circa Boards to houses or structures that are at least 100 years old. These boards not only celebrate the architectural heritage of the village but also help to educate the community about the history of these structures. To apply for a Circa Board, download the application from the society’s website, fill it out, and submit it along with the required documents, photos, and a $100 fee.

3. Discover the Stories of Historic Homes

The Historic Homes Committee (HHC) researches and preserves the history of historic homes and structures in the Village of Babylon, primarily those built before 1929. They can assist property owners in researching information about their homes and buildings, helping to uncover stories and memories associated with these structures. If you own a historic home or building, you can apply to be part of the HHC’s efforts by submitting an application with the required documents and photos.

4. Contribute to the Preservation of History Through Scholarships

The society awards a $1000 Excellence in Social Studies Scholarship annually to a Babylon Village high school senior who excels in social studies. This scholarship helps to foster a love for history and encourages students to pursue studies in this field. Eligible students must live in the village and attend one of the specified high schools. The guidance counselors of each school submit the name of their top student, and the society’s scholarship committee selects the recipient.

5. Participate in Youth Programs and Tours

The Babylon Village Historical Society hosts free tours for scouts and other youth groups, providing an engaging and educational experience for children. These tours not only teach kids about the village’s past but also help to instill a sense of pride in Babylon’s heritage. To schedule a visit for your youth group, call the society at 631-669-1756 or email info@babylonvillagehistoricalsociety.org.

6. Explore the Village’s Gilded Age and Resort Town Past

In the late 1800s, Babylon was known as a booming resort town with hotels and large estates. During the “gilded age” (1870-1890), the village attracted visitors from far and wide, making it a bustling hub of activity. The Babylon Historical Preservation Society offers a unique opportunity to learn about this fascinating period in Babylon’s history.

7. Get Involved with the Historical Society’s Board and Committees

The Babylon Village Historical Society is led by a dedicated team of trustees and officers who are passionate about preserving the village’s history. You can join this group of committed individuals by becoming a member, volunteering your time, or even serving on the board or one of the committees. It’s a great way to give back to the community and be part of the ongoing effort to preserve Babylon’s rich heritage for future generations.
