Fourteen families will see their loved ones’ names for the first time on Friday.

Twenty-five years. That is what Friday marks, and it is why this guide starts quietly. Before the bands and the beach bars and the biggest fair of the year, the Town of Babylon will stand at the water on Ocean Parkway and uncover a memorial that fourteen families have been waiting to see.

Then the weekend does what a Babylon September weekend does. Two farmers markets and a villagewide garage sale on Saturday, a 5K around Belmont Lake, live music on the sand from Cedar Beach to West Gilgo, and on Sunday the Annual Fair at Argyle Park — three hundred–plus vendors ringing the lake, the single biggest day on our local calendar.

One honest caveat before you plan: Sunday morning looks wet. Details below, and we would rather tell you now than have you find out in the parking lot.

🕯️ Twenty-Five Years — and Fourteen Names Nobody Has Seen Yet

Friday is the twenty-fifth anniversary of September 11, 2001. The Town of Babylon marks it at 6:00 PM at the Town of Babylon 9/11 Hometown Memorial on Ocean Parkway, between Overlook Beach and Cedar Beach, as it has every year since the memorial was dedicated in 2005.

This year the ceremony carries something it has never carried before. The Town will uncover a new Post-9/11 Memorial — a permanent monument to residents who became ill or lost their lives in the years after the attacks, from their service and from what they were exposed to in the aftermath. Fourteen names are inscribed on it at its dedication.

The memorial has stood at the site under a covering since it was installed. The fourteen families have not seen it. They will see their loved ones’ names for the first time on Friday evening, together, when the covering comes off during the program.

We wanted these families to see these names together, for the first time, on the day that changed everything for them. The new memorial joins the Hometown Memorial, which honors the Babylon residents killed on September 11, 2001. It was brought about by the Town Board, the Post-9/11 Memorial Committee and the Town of Babylon Chiefs Association, working alongside the families themselves. Each family has been personally invited to attend.

The ceremony is open to the public, and all residents are invited.

Earlier the same afternoon, the Village of Amityville holds its own annual service at 4:30 at the 9-11 Memorial Plaza by the Amityville Fire Department. You can be at both.

  • Friday, September 11 — Mostly sunny, high near 79°. Clear and mild overnight, around 62°. A beautiful day, top to bottom.
  • Saturday, September 12 — Mostly sunny, high near 77°, light south breeze. Showers and possibly thunderstorms move in overnight, after about 2 AM.
  • Sunday, September 13 — Showers, mainly before 2 PM, with an 80% chance of rain and a quarter to a half inch possible. High near 80°. The morning is the wet half of the day — the afternoon should dry out.

Sunday’s outdoor events all run through that morning window. Check each organizer’s page before you head out, bring a rain jacket, and know that the Argyle Park fair carries a published rain date of Sunday, September 20.

🗺️ The Rundown

Twenty-four events across three days, and they are spread wide: Babylon Village, Amityville, Lindenhurst, West Babylon, Oak Beach, Cedar Beach and West Gilgo Beach all show up on this list.

The mix leans heavily to live music — Salt Shack alone has five sets between Friday and Sunday — with farmers markets and community events owning Saturday morning, a race, a reunion, two theater shows at the Argyle, a cultural festival at Overlook Beach, and the fair that closes it all out.

Annual Fair at Argyle Park — Sunday, September 13, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Argyle Park, Babylon Village

If you only make one thing this weekend, make this. The Babylon Beautification Society’s Annual Fair wraps more than three hundred artisan vendors all the way around Argyle Lake, with food and beverage booths opening around the Village Gazebo at 10 AM and games and bounce houses for the kids over at Bayman Park across the creek. It is free to walk in, it takes over the whole village, and it is the day Babylon shows off.

Rain note: showers are likely Sunday morning. The Beautification Society publishes a rain date of Sunday, September 20 — check babylonbeautification.org before you leave the house.

🕯️ Friday, September 11

Two remembrances on Friday: Amityville at 4:30, and the Town’s 25th anniversary ceremony at Cedar Beach at 6:00, where the new Post-9/11 Memorial is unveiled. Both are free and open to anyone who wants to stand there. The rest of Friday night is the easy, warm, end-of-summer version of Babylon — and both things can be true on the same day.

  • 🎸 The Fast Track Band — debut at Tiki Joe’s — 5:00–8:00 PM, Tiki Joe’s Captree Boat Basin, Oak Beach. Free. Classic rock, pop and dance tunes, and a first-ever set for this band.
