Fourteen families have not yet seen the memorial that carries their loved ones’ names. On Friday evening, the covering comes off.
Twenty-five years after September 11, 2001, the Town of Babylon will gather at the water on Ocean Parkway and do something it has never done before.
At 6:00 p.m. on Friday, September 11, at the Town of Babylon 9/11 Hometown Memorial between Overlook Beach and Cedar Beach, the Town will hold its annual September 11th Memorial Ceremony — and then uncover a permanent Post-9/11 Memorial to residents whose lives were claimed in the years that followed.
The Names That Came After
The new memorial recognizes residents who became ill or died as a result of their service and their exposure in the aftermath of the attacks. Fourteen names are inscribed on it at its dedication.
It joins the Hometown Memorial already standing at the site, which honors the Babylon residents killed on September 11, 2001.
The new memorial has stood at the site under a covering since it was installed. The families of the fourteen honored residents have not seen it. They will see their loved ones’ names for the first time on Friday evening, together, when the covering comes off during the program.

How It Came About
The memorial was brought to life through the work of the Town Board, the Post-9/11 Memorial Committee and the Town of Babylon Chiefs Association, working alongside the families of those honored. Each family has been personally invited to attend Friday’s ceremony.
The Town intends the site to serve as a lasting place of reflection, where families can return for generations and where the sacrifices made in the aftermath of September 11th remain part of the community’s story.
