Now the practical part — read this before you make plans
The first nor’easter of the season is on top of us. A Coastal Flood Warning is in
effect for our shoreline from 6 PM tonight to 6 PM Sunday, it rains essentially
without stopping until Monday, and the weekend’s biggest event has already moved to
October. Several more are officially still on but sitting in exactly the wrong places.
Confirmed: the Long Island Family Festival has moved to October
The Copiague Chamber of Commerce’s Long Island Family Festival at
Tanner Park, scheduled for tonight through Sunday, is
on its rain dates: October 23–25, 2026. The Chamber’s own page now reads
“RAIN DATE IN EFFECT!” and the festival’s website has replaced the September dates with
the October ones outright.
That covers the festival’s entertainment as well, including the Soul Jam Revue.
Nothing festival-related is happening at Tanner Park this weekend. Put the 23rd in the calendar
— late October at Tanner Park, with any luck, will be a considerably nicer three days than
this one. New hours for October: Friday 6–10 PM, Saturday 11 AM–10 PM, Sunday
11 AM–9 PM.
Active advisories — what actually covers us
- Coastal Flood Warning — 6 PM tonight to 6 PM Sunday, Southwest Suffolk.
One to two feet of inundation above ground level in vulnerable waterfront
areas. The National Weather Service expects “moderate to major flooding over
multiple high tide cycles tonight through Sunday,” and says plainly that
“the worst flooding is expected with the Saturday morning high tide
cycle.” - Coastal Flood Advisory — in effect this morning until 2 PM, up to half a
foot of inundation, ahead of the Warning taking over tonight. - High Surf Advisory — until 8 PM Saturday. Breaking waves of
9 to 15 feet in the surf zone. - High Rip Current Risk — through Saturday evening. The NWS calls them
life-threatening for anyone entering the surf. Stay out of the water.
One correction worth making, because it is circulating: the
Wind Advisory issued yesterday covers southern Connecticut and southeastern New York
— not Suffolk County. We are not under a wind advisory. That does not mean it is calm: the
forecast for Babylon is gusts to 32 mph today, 46 mph tonight, and 48 mph Saturday,
which is still enough to bring branches down on wires and knock out power on a block or two. And
rain: three quarters of an inch tonight, another inch Saturday, one to two inches Saturday night,
one to two more on Sunday.
High tides — the hours to plan around
NOAA’s Babylon gauge, Great South Bay:
- Friday — 9:36 AM and 9:51 PM
- Saturday — 10:12 AM and 10:29 PM
- Sunday — 10:48 AM and 11:09 PM
Saturday’s 10:12 AM tide is the one. That is the cycle the Weather Service
singled out, and it lands squarely in the middle of Saturday morning’s outdoor events. The warning
states that “numerous road closures are likely, and vehicles parked in vulnerable areas
near the waterfront will likely become flooded,” and that the water pushes inland along
the tidal creeks and bays, not just at the shoreline. If your spot puddles in an ordinary storm,
move the car tonight rather than tomorrow morning.
Already closed or suspended
- Suffolk County Parks — County Executive Ed Romaine suspended
beachfront camping and outer beach driving across the county park system from
Thursday evening, to be reevaluated Sunday. Tent camping and campfires are
suspended from Friday evening through Sunday evening. Hard-sided campers and RVs are being
handled site by site. Questions: Suffolk County Parks, 631-854-4949. - Outer beach access generally — if you hold a 4×4 beach permit, this is
not your weekend. Smith Point’s outer beach is closed until further notice.
Still on, but call before you go
Everything in this section is officially still scheduled as of this morning. None
of it has been cancelled. Nearly all of it is outdoors, most of it is on or near the water, and a
coastal flood warning plus 48 mph gusts is exactly the combination that cancels an event at two
hours’ notice. Check the organizer’s own page or phone them before you leave the
house.
The one with a conflicting signal
Fallin’ For House — Salt Shack, Cedar Beach, Saturday 3 PM. One Long Island
listing service now shows this as cancelled. The Salt Shack’s own event page still shows it running.
Those two things cannot both be right, and the venue is the one that decides. We are not calling it
either way until they do — but given Cedar Beach and the flood warning, do not drive
out there without confirming.
Friday, September 25
- Moon Chaser Bay Jam cruise with the
Allmost Brothers Band, 7:30 PM, out of Captree. A bay cruise during a wind and
coastal flood event — the highest operational risk on the whole calendar this weekend.
Still being sold as of this morning. - DJ Mouse — Salt Shack, Cedar Beach, 4 PM. Flood zone.
- Stifler’s Mom — Salt Shack, Cedar Beach, 7 PM. Flood zone.
- Emo Night Brooklyn — Amityville Music Hall, 9 PM, 21+, $25.99. Indoors,
and unbothered by any of this.

Saturday, September 26 — the worst day
The one we would not want you to miss: the North Amityville Pool is being
renamed for Major Nancy Leftenant-Colon at 10 AM. She grew up in a house her family built in
Amityville, and in March 1948 she became the first Black nurse accepted into the regular United
States Army Nurse Corps — not the reserves, the regular Army, the month it was desegregated.
Her name going on a town building is the kind of thing this town should turn out for, and it is
scheduled for the exact hour of the worst high tide of the storm. If it holds, go. If you are not
sure, call the Town first.
- North Amityville Pool renaming — honoring Maj. Nancy
Leftenant-Colon, 10 AM. - Fall Festival — 500 Mount Avenue, West Babylon, 2–6 PM, with an
official rain date of Sunday the 27th. Given the forecast, assume the rain
date is live and check before you load the car — though Sunday is wet too. - Free Yoga with Lady Dee — Belmont Lake State Park, 2–3:30 PM.
Free, outdoors, and inland — so no flood risk, but an inch of rain is forecast for the
afternoon. Watch for a call either way. - Lindenhurst Farmers Market, 10 AM. Opens right on the
10:12 AM high tide, in the middle of the cycle the NWS flagged as the worst of the storm. - Farmers Market at the First United Methodist Church, 9 AM.
Same tide window. - Amityville Music Festival. Still scheduled, with an official rain date of
Sunday, September 27 — though Sunday is forecast wet and windy too, so
the rain date may not hold either. - 67th Family Picnic, Belmont Lake State Park, 11 AM. Inland,
so no flood risk — but it is a picnic, in an inch of rain. - Long Island Beer, Wine & Spirits Fest,
Tanger Outlets, 1 PM. - DJ Mike Torres — Salt Shack, Cedar Beach, 2 PM.

Sunday, September 27
- Lindenhurst Volksmarch, 9 AM–1 PM. The Historical Society’s fourth
annual non-competitive walk through Lindenhurst history, starting and finishing at Village
Square, 116 North Wellwood Avenue. Registration 9–11 AM, $15 a person or $20 a group,
commemorative medal at the finish — and the Village Lanterne is doing a brat and a beer
for $10 for anyone who finishes it. A long outdoor walk in continued wind and rain: still
officially on, but watch for a postponement. - Babylon Village Farmers Market, 8 AM, at the Gazebo.
- Long Island 6 Hour Run & Relay, Belmont Lake State
Park, 8:30 AM — the 60th birthday celebration, in memory of Fred Von Der Heydt. Six hours
of running in a nor’easter is a particular kind of commitment. - Touch the 80’s, Tasty Wave & Larry the Duck — the
WLIR/DRE 1st Wave celebration at Salt Shack, Cedar Beach, 1 PM. - Amityville Music Festival rain date, if Saturday moves.

Featured event — indoors, and unaffected
“On Your Feet!” at the Argyle Theatre, Babylon Village
With the waterfront off the table, the smartest seat in town is an indoor one. The Argyle
Theatre’s production of On Your Feet! — the Gloria and Emilio Estefan story, all horns
and hip-shaking and a score you already know every word to — is on stage at 34 West Main Street
through October 25. No storm notice was posted on the theatre’s site as of this morning. A night of
somebody else’s music feels about right today.
This weekend: Friday 7:30 PM · Saturday 2:30 PM and 7:30 PM · Sunday 2:00
PM. Box office 844-631-LIVE (5483) — worth a call before you go, both
to confirm the time and because a washed-out Friday is exactly when a last seat opens up.
Safe bets: anything with a roof
The libraries, the theatres, the bowling alleys, and every restaurant and bar in the Town of
Babylon are barely touched by any of this. They are open, they are dry, and a washed-out weekend is
a hard one for a small business that was counting on the foot traffic. If the storm has cancelled
your plans, spend the money locally and spend it indoors — and today, the
library run counts twice.

Island Family Festival just moved to the 23rd through the 25th — send us the new date and we
will carry it twice: once now, and again when it comes around.
