October Is the Biggest Month We Publish — and It Ends on a Saturday

Here is what October looks like in the Town of Babylon this year: the apple festival and the haunted harvest land on the same Saturday, a four-day food festival takes over Tanger for Columbus Day weekend, the Beautification Society fills Argyle Park with three hundred craft makers, and the family festival the September nor’easter washed out finally gets the weekend it was owed.

Then there is the wrinkle that changes everything: Halloween falls on a Saturday. That happens about once every seven years. The parades run in the morning, the trunk-or-treats move to the weekend before, and the night itself belongs to everybody.

🍂 What October Is Asking of Us

A month is never only its holiday. Alongside the parades and the pumpkins, October carries a set of observances — and several of them have something real happening right here in the Town of Babylon.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

All month · October 1–31

Plainly: October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. National Mammography Day falls on Friday, October 16, and Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness Day on October 13. If you have been putting off a screening, this is the month that exists to ask you about it.

STANDING ALL MONTH — LINDENHURST
The Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition’s Vision of Hope Garden stands at the southeast corner of Town Hall Park, 200 East Sunrise Highway, Lindenhurst — pink and teal flags and ribbon bows, up through September and October both. A $10 donation places a detachable ribbon streamer in honor or in memory of someone touched by breast or gynecological cancer, and the ribbons are returned at the end of the two months to those who ask for them back. The Coalition serves Amityville, Babylon, Copiague, Deer Park, East Farmingdale, Lindenhurst and North Babylon — babylonbreastcancer.org, 631-893-4110.

Three dated things sit on the calendar this month. Breast Cancer Awareness at Copiague Memorial Public Library, Wednesday, October 15 at 2pm, free — Stony Brook Cancer Center health educators on risk factors, early detection and prevention. The Amityville Teachers Association Trunk or Treat and Breast Cancer Walk, Sunday, October 25, 10am–1pm at James A Caples Memorial Park — the district teachers’ union running a trunk-or-treat and an awareness walk as one event. And TOTE BAG: Breast Cancer Awareness at Wyandanch Public Library, Thursday, October 29 at 7pm, free.

Monday, October 12 — a day with several names

The second Monday in October

The second Monday in October is the federal holiday Columbus Day. It is also observed widely as Indigenous Peoples’ Day, and in New York it is marked as Italian Heritage Day as well — New York City’s public school calendar lists the date as Italian Heritage / Indigenous Peoples’ Day, and schools are closed. Three names, one Monday, and a town with people who hold each of them. We note all three because all three are true here.

Fire Prevention Week

October 4–10, 2026

Fire Prevention Week runs the first full week of the month. If your firehouse is holding an open house, send it to us and we will list it — free. In the meantime it is a good evening to test the smoke detectors.

And the rest of the month’s roll call

Hispanic Heritage Month runs through October 15.
World Teachers’ Day — October 5.
World Mental Health Day — October 10.
National Book Month, which every library on this calendar is observing whether it meant to or not.
And, month-long: Domestic Violence Awareness, Down Syndrome Awareness, ADHD Awareness, National Bullying Prevention, LGBTQ History and Italian American Heritage Month.

📢 The Babylon Local Event Network

This calendar is built every month from what is already public — your website, your Facebook events, the library and village calendars. If we can find it, we list it, free. That also means what we found may not be what you meant.

Check your listing — and send us a photo
If a time, a price, a date or a location is wrong, reply to any of our emails or use the link below and we will correct it the same day. And if your event is still wearing our placeholder image, send the flyer you already post on Facebook — it goes straight onto your listing, and a listing with real artwork is the one that gets clicked.

Running something in November? Send it now and we will carry it twice — once in the November guide and again the week it happens.

See You Out There, Babylon

Six hundred and twenty-one things to do, three festivals stacked on one Saturday, a family festival getting the weekend it was owed, and a Halloween that lands where it should. We keep this page current all month as organizers send changes — so if something moves, check back here before you load the car.

See you around town,
Ryan Williams
