Summer doesn’t end quietly around here. It ends free.

There are thirteen days left between now and Labor Day, and the Town of Babylon spends every one of them giving things away. Concerts on the village green. Movies on a library lawn. A dinosaur trail you walk at your own pace. Two farmers markets. Bocce courts nobody is using.

And the one nobody tells you: every Town park and beach is free after 5 PM. No permit checked, no gate, no fee. The last two weeks of summer are the cheapest โ€” and the emptiest โ€” the shoreline gets all year.

So we counted. Fifty free things, all of them real, all of them here in the Town of Babylon, all of them available between today and Monday, September 7th. Ten are dated events you have to show up for. Forty are open right now.

These have dates on them. Miss one and it’s gone until next summer. Supper by the Bay kicks it off tonight on the Amityville waterfront, the Gazebo Concert Series and Fridays on the Greene both land Friday night, and Salt Shack’s Family Fun Night closes the whole season out on Labor Day itself.

Beaches & Waterfront โ€” free after 5 PM

Here is the part most people never find out. Town parks and beaches stop charging at 5 PM. Drive up, park, walk on. And if you’re a Town of Babylon resident, your 2026 permit already covers you all day โ€” at this point in the season you’ve long since paid for it, so use it.

Late August into September is the best-kept secret on this shoreline: the water is still warm, the crowds are gone, and the sunsets start early enough that you can actually catch one on a weeknight.

Parks & Playgrounds โ€” walk right in

The Town put real money into playgrounds this year, and almost none of it has been announced. Four of these were rebuilt or replaced in 2026 and are effectively brand new.

Courts & Fields โ€” show up and play

Three of the Town pools got brand-new tennis and pickleball courts in 2026. They are free, they are outdoors, and on a weekday evening they are usually empty.

Five libraries serve the Town, and between them they run something free almost every hour the doors are open โ€” yoga, storytimes, movies, tech help, crafts, games. If you only do one thing on this list, get a card.

Back to Business โ€” the other September

Everybody talks about Back to School. Nobody talks about the thing that happens to every business owner in this Town at the exact same moment.

The kids go back. The beach chairs come in. And on the Tuesday after Labor Day, a switch flips โ€” phones start ringing again, inboxes wake up, and the last quarter of the year begins whether you prepared for it or not. September through December is where most local businesses make or miss their number. It is the holiday run, the end-of-year budget flush, the season when people finally book the thing they have been putting off since June.

Summer was the break. This is Back to Business. And you get about ten days of runway before it starts.

Three things worth doing before Labor Day

1. Join your Chamber. This is the least glamorous and most reliably useful thing on the list. The Town of Babylon has active Chambers in Amityville, Copiague, Deer Park, Lindenhurst and North Babylon, and every one of them runs the fall mixers, the ribbon cuttings and the referral relationships that quietly produce Q4 business. A Chamber membership costs less than one ad and lasts a year. If you have been meaning to, this is the week โ€” they are all planning their September calendars right now.

2. Get your fall promotion ready now, not in October. Whatever you are running for the holidays โ€” the offer, the photos, the landing page, the email โ€” build it while things are still slow. The businesses that win Q4 around here are not the ones with the biggest budget. They are the ones who were ready on the first Tuesday in September while everyone else was still writing copy.

3. Make sure people can actually find you. Every business in the Town of Babylon can be listed free on Babylon Local, the Town’s community directory. No cost, nothing to set up, no catch โ€” over 1,100 local businesses are already on it, including the members of all five Chambers above. If you are not on it, you are missing from the place your neighbours look first.
