No Because Actually — Summer Is Down to Its Last Two Weeks

Chat. We need to talk about the calendar. Labor Day is Monday, September 7, and Long Island districts go back after that — so unless your school does something wild, this is realistically the second-to-last full week of summer. Two weeks. That’s the whole runway. The Sept 8-ish energy is closing in and there is nothing any of us can do about it.

And here’s the part that’s living rent free in my head: the calendar already knew. Look at Monday and Tuesday. Twenty-three of this week’s thirty-nine events are stacked into those two days, and they are almost entirely libraries — storytimes, sensory stations, a zine drop-in, qigong, Pictionary night, a Google Docs class, and a time capsule workshop. Plus a Planning Board meeting. The beach-bar era is quietly handing the mic to the Dewey Decimal era and it is happening in real time.

But we are so back on the other end, because Friday did not get the memo. Eleven events. A street party in Amityville, a free gazebo concert in Babylon Village, three separate Electric Dudes boat situations, and a Bunco night that costs three dollars. Summer’s not cooked yet — it’s just doing its last lap. (Yes I’m a millennial typing this. No I will not be taking questions.)

  • Monday, Aug 24: sunny, high near 80°, cooling to about 76° by late afternoon. Slight chance of showers after 2 PM (20%) — it’s not that deep, and you’re headed indoors to a library anyway.
  • Tuesday, Aug 25: sunny, 79°, basically no rain in the forecast. Genuinely perfect. The aura is immaculate.
  • Wednesday, Aug 26: sunny, 80°, zero percent chance of rain. This is the best day of the week and it is not close. Wednesday ate.

The shape of the week is the story: Monday and Tuesday are a wall of library programming (eighteen library events in thirty-nine-eight hours — storytimes, crafts, gentle-strength classes, yoga, qigong, a book club, a zine drop-in, a tech class, and game nights), the civic calendar shows up with three meetings, and then Wednesday through Friday the live music takes over the waterfront again like it’s refusing to accept the season is ending.

The way that this week is basically a split-screen of “back to school prep” and “one more night out” — that’s not an accident, that’s just August 24th. Let him cook.

Unearth YOUR Story: Time Capsules

A time capsule workshop in the last two weeks of summer. I’m sorry, the symbolism is not even subtle. You literally sit down and decide what from this summer is worth sealing up — that’s a core memory factory with a program registration form attached. Free, at the Lindenhurst library, and honestly the most on-theme thing on the entire calendar. If you do one thing this week, this is the one.

Fridays on the Greene — Abate Family Band

Friday, Aug 28 · 6:00 PM · Greene Ave at Broadway, Amityville
Amityville closes the street, the Abate Family Band plays, and the whole village turns into one long block of neighbors and food and folding chairs. The Amityville Chamber has member tabling going on inside it too (free for members, so if you own a shop in town — that’s your sign). Storms clear out Friday morning; the evening looks fine. Go be a person outside.

2026 Gazebo Concert Series: JC Keys Band

Friday, Aug 28 · 8:00 PM · Babylon Village Gazebo · FREE
The gazebo series is undefeated and this is one of its last swings of the summer. Live band, Babylon Village, eight o’clock, costs exactly zero dollars. Bring a chair, bring the grandparents, bring the kid who’s already sad about the school bus. Free outdoor music in the last stretch of August is peak Long Island and I refuse to be normal about it.

📚 Monday, Aug 24

Monday is giving “the library is the main character now” and I need everyone to make peace with it. Lindenhurst opens the day with Summer Circletime at 10 and Summer Storytime at 11, then flips the room into Sensory Stations at 1, while Copiague runs Story Fun at 10:30, Simply Stronger at 11, and Evening Yoga at 7. Babylon has Adult Games at 1, North Babylon has a Children’s Paint Night at 6:30, the Salt Shack Family Fun Night starts at 4 for anyone still clinging to sand, and the Town Planning Board meets at 7 because governance waits for no season. Ten events, nine of them free. Unserious levels of value.

🕰️ Tuesday, Aug 25

Thirteen events — the biggest day of the week — and ten of them are free, which is a ratio I need everyone to sit with. The heavy hitter is Unearth YOUR Story: Time Capsules at Lindenhurst at 4, with Drop In Zines at 11 in the same building because Lindenhurst is out here running an actual arts program. Copiague stacks Sing Sign with Me at 11:30, Drop In Crafts at noon, and Pictionary Game Night at 6:30; North Babylon runs a Book Discussion at 10, Drop-In Games & Crafts at 4, and Intro to Google Docs at 6; and Amityville brings Simply Strong for Life with Joyce at 11 and Qigong at 1. Then the day turns: Gen X plays Ocean Parkway at 7, and the town runs the Accessory Apartment Review Board and Amityville Village Court at 6.

Three events, and the weather said sunny, 80°, zero percent rain — so Wednesday is quietly the best night of the week and it barely tried. Supper by the Bay brings the Mutant Kings to the Amityville waterfront at 6, The Upside Down returns to Tiki Joe’s Captree at 5:30, and Pour Some 80’s On Me hits Ocean Parkway at 7. A bay supper, a Stranger Things-coded band name, and an ’80s tribute on a cloudless August night. It’s giving last-chance-energy and I’m into it.

🌙 Thursday, Aug 27

Thursday is a three-event night with a weather asterisk — 81° and partly sunny, but showers and thunderstorms are in play (30% during the day, climbing toward 60% overnight), so keep the radar open. DLB (Danny Langdon Band) plays Tiki Joe’s Captree at 5:30, Full Moon Yoga & Meditation with Jackie runs on East Main Street in Babylon at 7, and The Max — The Ultimate 90’s Party takes Ocean Parkway at 7 (yes, named after the diner from Saved by the Bell; yes, that’s the whole bit). Full moon yoga in the second-to-last week of summer is a choice and it is the correct one.

Eleven events. The storms clear out before 8 AM and then Friday just goes for it. Fridays on the Greene shuts down Greene Ave at Broadway in Amityville at 6 with the Abate Family Band (and Chamber member tabling right inside it), the free Gazebo Concert Series with the JC Keys Band plays Babylon Village at 8, and the Electric Dudes are running three separate end-of-summer boat events out of Captree — a reunion cruise at 7:30, a party at 8, and a cruise at 8. Add Krush and Lovesong on Ocean Parkway, a debut at Lily’s, live music at Restoration in Lindenhurst, and a $3 Bunco night, and the last big Friday of August is fully booked. Bestie, pick one and commit.

Thirty-nine events. Twenty-one of them free. Eighteen library programs in two days, three civic meetings, a time capsule, a street party, a free gazebo concert, and three boats. Labor Day is September 7 and school picks up after that, so this is one of the last two full weeks — and the calendar clearly decided to go out swinging.

Don’t be delulu about the runway. Go to the storytime. Fill out the time capsule. Show up at the gazebo with a folding chair. Summer’s not over yet, and we’re not acting like it is.
