Let Me Tell You About This Town

Nobody talks about this town. Nobody! Which is a shame, because it is the finest town in Suffolk County and everybody knows it.

Thirty-seven events this weekend. Thirty-seven! And every single one of them tells you where it is, when it starts, and exactly what it costs. In advance. In writing. Try getting that anywhere else right now.

Because out there this week, they renamed a lake. A whole lake! Signed an order and everything. Very strategic. In here, we booked a Beatles tribute band into a public library and did not charge one person a dollar. You tell me who had the better week.

Out there they cannot say which country the beef is coming from — the Agriculture Secretary went on the record and said she was “not privy.” Not privy! In here, you walk up to the man who grew the tomato, and you ask him, and he tells you. That is the whole system. It works perfectly. Nobody else is doing this.

Three farmers markets. Ten free events. Eighty-two degrees and sunny on Sunday.

We are, frankly, running circles around everybody.

🌤️ The Forecast, And It Is a Beauty

Let me tell you about this forecast. People have been asking me about the forecast.

  • Friday — 81°, partly sunny, a 30% chance of a passing storm. Handled. It clears.
  • Saturday — 80°, mostly sunny, a one percent chance of rain. One percent!
  • Sunday — 82° and sunny. Perfect. Some people are saying the most perfect.

One percent. Do you know how hard it is to get one percent? Nobody gets one percent. We got one percent.

So there are no excuses left. I looked for excuses. Personally. There are none.

The Rundown

Thirty-seven events. Thirty-seven! Friday through Sunday, all across the Town of Babylon. Nineteen on Friday alone, which is the biggest single day we have had all month and frankly all summer.

Live music from Amityville all the way out to West Gilgo. Three farmers markets. A Beatles tribute band — at a library. The closing weekend of a Broadway musical, right here in Babylon Village. Two boat parties. And enough free library programming to fill an entire Friday without spending one dollar.

Every one of them has a real venue, a real start time, and a real human being you can call on the telephone. We are fully privy. Completely privy. The most privy.

🐴 Cheaper Than a Wild Horse

Out there, they have been selling federally protected wild horses for twenty-five dollars apiece. Twenty-five dollars! Terrible deal. Terrible.

🍅 Three Farmers Markets, Three Villages

This is the best part of the whole newsletter, so I am putting it up high. Three markets. Three villages. And at every one of them the person who grew the thing is standing right there behind the thing.

You want to know what country your tomato is from? Ask him. He will tell you. No proclamation. No quota. No “not privy.” Just a guy, a tomato, and an answer.

🎪 Friday, August 28 — 19 Events

Nineteen events. On one Friday. Nineteen! That is more than some towns do in a month, and I am not going to say which towns, because we do not do that here.

The day splits neatly in half. Daytime belongs to the libraries — Messy Play Day, Friday Afternoon Movie and Not Bored with Board Games are all free and all before dinner. After six it is the gazebo, the Greene, and the water: 2026 Gazebo Concert Series: JC Keys Band plays Babylon Village, Fridays on the Greene — Abate Family Band takes Amityville, and the Moon Chaser goes out twice.

On the 30% storm chance: it lands late afternoon and clears out. The gazebo show at 8 PM will be fine.

Saturday is the big one. Huge day. The markets open at nine, and at two-thirty a Beatles tribute band plays a public library — for free — which a lot of people said could not be done.

Start at Farmers Market or Lindenhurst Farmers Market in the morning, put “The Day Trippers” – A Tribute to the Beatles Concert on the calendar for 2:30, and finish with Ryder: Burn The Sky Album Release Show at AMH at Amityville Music Hall.

If the forecast is wrong — and it has been wrong all summer — South Bay Cinemas in West Babylon is the reliable indoor play. Five renovated auditoriums, digital projection and sound, luxury seating, and unlimited free popcorn refills, which is the single most underrated amenity in the Town of Babylon.

Two films open today, including a Ridley Scott picture, which is not a sentence we get to write most weekends.

We made some jokes up top. Here is the actual reporting behind them, so you can check us.
No commentary — just what happened, who reported it, and when.

  • Lake Ontario. President Trump signed an executive order on August 27, 2026
    renaming Lake Ontario “Lake America” for United States federal use, effective immediately, amid a trade
    dispute with Canada. The Interior Department and the Board on Geographic Names have 30 days to update federal
    records. The order cannot compel Canada or international bodies to adopt the name.

  • Canada tariffs. The US imposed 50% tariffs on $20 billion in Canadian goods
    after trade talks collapsed August 21. Canada announced matching retaliatory tariffs on $20 billion in American
    goods, beginning September 8. (NPR, NBC News — Aug 22–25, 2026)
  • Beef imports. A proclamation permits 300,000 metric tons of lean beef
    trimmings — 100,000 per month for 90 days beginning September 1 — at an in-quota tariff rate.
    The proclamation does not name supplier countries; it assigns the quota to “other countries
    or areas.” Asked which countries, Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins said she was
    “not privy to talk about that,” noting conversations were ongoing. Congress repealed
    country-of-origin labeling for beef and pork in 2015, so imported beef is not required to display

  • Wild horses. A New York Times investigation published August 20, 2026
    reported the Bureau of Land Management sold roughly 3,700 wild horses in 2025, more than twice the
    previous pace, including sales at $25 per horse to a livestock trader, with some animals reportedly
    moving through buyers toward slaughter facilities outside the country. BLM’s response: its
    policy strictly prohibits selling horses for slaughter and buyers sign a bill of sale agreeing not to; BLM also says
    it does not track horses after sale. (New York Times, Aug 20, 2026; BLM Sales Program)
  • One thing we are not saying. These are two separate stories. There is no evidence that
    horse meat is being imported or sold as beef in American supermarkets.     Please don’t repeat that — it
    isn’t true, and the actual reporting is strange enough on its own.
  • The USS Abraham Lincoln. Stars and Stripes and Navy Times reported in
    August 2026 that crew aboard the carrier — at sea roughly 250 consecutive days since leaving
    San Diego in November 2025 — have struggled with exhaustion and declining morale, including a sailor who went
    overboard on August 3 in what was described as a suicide attempt, and another who was stopped by a
    shipmate. Families also reported food shortages, water contamination and mail disruption. That sailor now
    faces disciplinary charges and could lose half his pay. Members of Congress have asked the Defense
    Secretary for answers. The Navy’s response: an official said there had not been
    “an increase in suicidal ideations or attempts aboard the ship,” while confirming one sailor went
    overboard; CENTCOM disputed the broader reports.
