A Black Cat’s Guide to Halloween Week. Come Along, If You Dare.

Permit an introduction. I am Morrow, the black cat on the cover. In old witch stories, a familiar is an animal friend who keeps a witch company and helps watch for trouble. I have been that cat for several hundred years. I have sat beside witches, wizards and warlocks, crossed many moonlit streets, and learned that the best magic is finding somewhere good to go with your neighbors.

You may know my more famous cousins. Salem talks back to Sabrina the Teenage Witch. Samantha on Bewitched could change a day with one twitch of her nose. At Hogwarts in Harry Potter, owls get the mail-delivery jobs; cats have better things to do. I have a calendar to inspect. This guide runs from Monday, October 26 through Halloween Saturday, October 31.

From Morrow’s Book of Nights

A word from my windowsill: the National Weather Service forecast for Babylon, checked October 25, calls for mostly sunny days, with highs around 59°–68° through Saturday. Check again before outdoor plans; even a centuries-old cat respects the weather.

🎃 Haunted Gingerbread Houses

Monday, October 26 · Lindenhurst Memorial Library · 3:00 PM–3:45 PM

I have lived in houses with real ghosts. At Lindenhurst Memorial Library, you can build a smaller, sweeter version. Two sessions are listed; choose the one that suits your Monday. 🔗 See the full listing →

🎃 Shrek Rave: Swamp-O-Ween (18+) at Amityville Music Hall

Thursday, October 29 · Amityville Music Hall · 9:00 PM–11:00 PM

An 18+ costume-friendly rave at Amityville Music Hall. Salem may prefer the sofa, but I have danced through stranger centuries. 🔗 See the full listing →

🎃 Spooks and Spines: Halloween

Saturday, October 31 · The Neverending Story · 7:00 PM–10:00 PM

A Halloween-night screening of the original Halloween at The Neverending Story bookstore in Babylon. Books, shadows and a seat indoors: a splendid ending. 🔗 See the full listing →

🧙 From this old cat’s notebook: There is more here than Halloween. Libraries have classes and storytimes, venues have live music, and Saturday brings community plans from morning to night. The day sections below include every published Town-area event I found on the calendar, with a link to each full listing.

The first spell is simple: leave the house. 🎃 Haunted Gingerbread Houses turns Monday into a little haunted architecture; 🎃 Black Cat & Pumpkins Drawing gives my kind a proper portrait; and Cinnamon Swirl Cake promises a sweeter ending. I once accompanied a wizard who tried to conjure cake. Trust the bakers instead.

A 🎃 Ghost Family Portrait is the sort of family heirloom I can admire. Add 🎃 Felt Pumpkin, Tooth and Nail: The History of Werewolves in Cinema! on werewolves in cinema, and Bienvenidos a Bilingual PJ Storytime for bilingual storytime. Hogwarts has its moving portraits; Babylon can make its own.

Samantha might twitch her nose on Bewitched to sort this Thursday out. I prefer to choose: 🎃 Halloween Storytime and Parade, 🎃 Long Island’s Haunted Cemeteries, 🎃 Frankenstein: The Man and The Myth or the 18+ 🎃 Shrek Rave: Swamp-O-Ween (18+) at Amityville Music Hall. A cat can be dignified before lunch and dance after dark.

The eve of Halloween arrives with 🎃 Halloween Concert & Parade, 🎃 This is Halloween, 🎃 AMH Halloween Cover Show (bands covering Neglect, Verbal Abuse, Cro Mags, Saves The Day + more) at Amityville Music Hall and Happy Hour Band: Victims of Rock at Lily Flanagan’s. I have heard centuries of music; this Friday is plenty loud enough to wake the old warlocks.

Halloween itself is why I stayed up all week. 🎃 Kiddie Costume Jamboree and 🎃 Halloween Parade start the day; 🎃 Trunk or Treat at Simpson UMC follows in Amityville. After sunset, 🎃 Spooks and Spines: Halloween awaits bookish grown-ups. The rest of the day is below, and yes, I will be watching from a windowsill.

I shall return to my windowsill. You, dear neighbor, should choose a plan. Even after several hundred years, the best part of Halloween is still finding one another out in town.

See you around town,
