The Jack O’Lanterns Are Already Lit

Something wicked this way comes — and it is carrying a cider donut. RISE rises from the darkness tonight at Usdan, the Rotary summons its apple donuts from the fryer tomorrow morning in Amityville, and by Sunday a pumpkin patch has crept onto the sand at Cedar Beach. Somewhere in the witching hours between, fireworks shriek into the sky over Overlook Beach.

One honest note from the crystal ball: the weather is unusually warm (mid-to-upper 70s) but as restless as a poltergeist all three days — showers possible Friday, late showers Saturday, isolated thunderstorms rumbling in late Sunday like a mad scientist’s lab coming to life. The outdoor festivals should survive the daylight hours; just keep one eye on the sky once dusk creeps in. Indoor lairs are flagged on every day.

THIS WEEKEND, IF YOU DARE
48 events
haunting the Town of Babylon, from the library stacks to the shoreline
9 Friday  ·  27 Saturday  ·  12 Sunday  ·  3 free outdoor festivals (no soul required)

Amityville Rotary Club Apple Festival

Saturday 10am–3pm · 140 Park Ave, Amityville, NY 11701-3113, United States

Free, 10am–3pm at Park Avenue School. The Rotary has been conjuring this one for ages, and the cider donuts truly do vanish like ghosts at dawn — go early, bring cash, and drift over to the Haunted Harvest afterward before the werewolves claim the last one. 🔗 See the full listing →

Deepavali Festival & Fireworks at Overlook Beach

Saturday 12pm–8pm · Overlook Beach · Free

Free, noon–8pm at Overlook Beach. The Festival of Lights on the bay, ending with fireworks over the water. In a weekend full of shadows, this is the brightest thing on the calendar — nothing else looks or sounds like it. 🔗 See the full listing →

Pumpkin Festival & Family Fun Day at Salt Shack

Sunday 12pm–4pm · Salt Shack NY Cedar Beach · Free (family activities)

Free family activities, noon–4pm at Cedar Beach. Pumpkins, the beach, and live music howling into the evening — the gentlest haunting this weekend offers. 🔗 See the full listing →

And one more, because it is Saturday too and the spirits insist: Amityville’s Haunted Harvest possesses The Triangle from 1pm to 7pm — free to walk in, and the whole block transforms, full-moon style, into a family Halloween street festival.

Friday, October 2 9 events · 78°, passing showers, overcast (perfect brooding weather)

Friday evening only below — the daytime library programs have already slipped into the afterlife by the time this lands.

Friday night is when the season claws its way out of the grave. RISE of the Jack O’Lanterns opens tonight at Usdan in Wheatley Heights — thousands of hand-carved pumpkins grinning in the dark, 21 select nights running through November 1, and opening night is always the one people whisper about for weeks. Down in Babylon Village, On Your Feet! (The Emilio & Gloria Estefan Musical) is on at the Argyle, and out at Cedar Beach The 90’s Band plays the Salt Shack with the black water lapping right there. If you’d rather lurk somewhere quieter, A Taste of the Dominican Republic is at Copiague Memorial and a full coven of heavy bands descends on Amityville Music Hall.

Saturday, October 3 27 events · 75°, showers late (the werewolves won’t mind)

Saturday is the big one — the full moon of the weekend. The Amityville Rotary Club Apple Festival runs 10am to 3pm at Park Avenue School — free, and the Rotary’s apple cider donuts have a long history of disappearing before noon like a vampire at sunrise, so plan accordingly. A few blocks away Amityville’s Haunted Harvest possesses The Triangle from 1pm, free to walk in. Out at Overlook Beach, the Deepavali Festival & Fireworks runs noon to 8pm and ends with fireworks over the water. Add the Village-wide garage sale haunting every street of the Village, The Eras Tour (Drag Version) at The Warehouse, and Freckleface Strawberry for the little monsters at the Argyle, and you have a day that needs a plan — or a broomstick.
