Quoth the Calendar: One Hundred and Eleven

Once upon an October Monday, while the harbor lay in grey,
Came a week of small enchantments to the town we call our own —
Not a raven, not a portent, merely Tuesday, mildly dawning,
Bearing cupcakes shaped like flying bats and lanterns lit till dawn.
One hundred and eleven gatherings. Quoth the calendar: come on.

This is the first full week of October, and the Town of Babylon has taken to it the way it always does — quietly, and then all at once. There are 111 events between Monday morning and Friday night, and a startling number of them involve a pumpkin.

October is also a month that carries more than costumes, and we will get to that below: the observances, the one on the twelfth that goes by more than one name, and the one that asks something of us rather than offering something to us.

🍂 What October Is Asking of Us

A month is never only its holiday. October carries a good deal more than the thirty-first, and the first full week of it is where most of that begins.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

All month · October 1–31

Plainly, and without the costume this post is otherwise wearing: October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. If you have been putting off a screening, this is the month that exists to ask you about it. There is nothing clever to add to that, so here is what is actually happening near you instead.

UP RIGHT NOW — AND YOU CAN WALK THROUGH IT THIS WEEK
The Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition’s Vision of Hope Garden stands at the southeast corner of Town Hall Park, 200 East Sunrise Highway, Lindenhurst — pink and teal flags and ribbon bows, up through September and October both. A $10 donation places a detachable ribbon streamer in honor or in memory of someone touched by breast or gynecological cancer, and the ribbons are returned at the end of the two months to those who ask for them back. It is there today, and tomorrow, and every evening this week. The Coalition serves Amityville, Babylon, Copiague, Deer Park, East Farmingdale, Lindenhurst and North Babylon — babylonbreastcancer.org, 631-893-4110.

On our own calendar, the dated programs all fall after this week, which is worth knowing now so you can put them down: Breast Cancer Awareness at Copiague Memorial Public Library on Wednesday, October 15 at 2pm — free, with Stony Brook Cancer Center health educators on risk factors, early detection and prevention — and TOTE BAG: Breast Cancer Awareness at Wyandanch Public Library on Thursday, October 29 at 7pm, also free. And the one that is an actual walk: the Amityville Teachers Association Trunk or Treat and Breast Cancer Walk, Sunday, October 25, 10am to 1pm at James A Caples Memorial Park on South Bay View Avenue — the district teachers’ union running a trunk-or-treat and an awareness walk as one thing, which is a very Amityville way to solve a scheduling problem. National Mammography Day is Friday, October 16, and Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness Day is October 13.

Nothing breast-cancer-related sits in this Monday-to-Friday stretch itself. If your organization has something and we have missed it, send it over — it is free to list and we will run it.

Monday, October 12 — a day with several names

Next Monday · the long weekend this week is building toward

The second Monday in October is the federal holiday Columbus Day. It is also observed widely as Indigenous Peoples’ Day, and in New York it is marked as Italian Heritage Day as well — New York City’s public school calendar lists the date as Italian Heritage / Indigenous Peoples’ Day, and schools are closed. Three names, one Monday, and a town with people who hold each of them. We note all three because all three are true here.

This week is the run-up to it. The Famous Food Festival opens Friday at Tanger Outlets for that long weekend, and October being Italian American Heritage Month, Monday’s Bilingual Beginners: Italian Storytime in the library is a small, early nod to it.

Fire Prevention Week — and it is this week

October 4–10, 2026

Fire Prevention Week runs Sunday through Saturday. No Babylon firehouse has an open house on our calendar this week — if yours does, send it to us and we will run it. In the meantime the week offers its own quiet version: Copiague’s Child Safety ID Program on Friday afternoon, and a good evening at home to test the smoke detectors.

And the rest of the month’s roll call

Hispanic Heritage Month runs through October 15 — Wednesday’s Bienvenidos a Bilingual PJ Storytime and Thursday’s Biligüe Mama Gansa both sit inside it.
World Teachers’ Day is Monday the 5th — today, if you are reading this the morning it lands.
World Mental Health Day is Saturday the 10th.
National Book Month, which the ninety-one library programs on this week’s calendar are quietly observing whether they meant to or not.
And, month-long: Domestic Violence Awareness, Down Syndrome Awareness, ADHD Awareness, National Bullying Prevention, LGBTQ History and Italian American Heritage Month.

Halloween itself lands on Saturday, October 31 this year — a Saturday, which happens about once every seven years and changes everything about how the week before it behaves. The complete October guide has the whole month in one place, parades and trunk-or-treats included.

Frankenstein (opening)

Friday, October 9 — opening · Studio Theatre Long Island

Studio Theatre Long Island raises the curtain on Shelley’s creature — the articulate, grieving one of the novel, not the flat-headed imposter of the costume aisle. If you are going to let one thing in this month genuinely unsettle you, let it be the one with an argument. 🔗 See the full listing →

Famous Food Festival – Columbus Day Weekend

Friday, October 9 · Tanger Outlets Deer Park

Tanger Outlets Deer Park opens the Columbus Day weekend with the Famous Food Festival, and The NuGroove Project plays it. This is the week’s hinge: everything Monday through Thursday is, in some sense, waiting for it. 🔗 See the full listing →

Halloween Luminary

Monday, October 5 · Lindenhurst Memorial Library · Free

Lindenhurst Memorial Library lights its Halloween Luminary at half past six on the first evening of the week — which is either a modest craft program or the official moment the season starts, depending on how you hold it. 🔗 See the full listing →

Monday, October 5 15 events

Monday arrives without ceremony, and the libraries answer it with sugar and shadow. Spooky Cats and Flying Bats Cupcakes ices at half six in North Babylon while Lindenhurst sets out its Halloween Luminary at the same hour; earlier, Copiague hands children a Spooky Exploding Canvas Craft and West Babylon opens a Teddy Bear Clinic for patients of the stuffed and silent kind. For the grown and the gothic, Babylon discusses Mexican Gothic — a haunted house, properly done. And because October is Italian American Heritage Month, Bilingual Beginners: Italian Storytime keeps the week honest.

Tuesday, October 6 25 events

Tuesday is the week’s deep breath, and it spends it on craft. North Babylon turns out Wooden Pumpkins, the Color Palette sets up Paint Night: White Pumpkin & Roses, and Lindenhurst throws the small ones a Tots Night Out: Halloween Hoot — which is precisely the sort of name that earns its exclamation without printing one. West Babylon runs Books, Balls, and Blocks in two sittings, and Wyandanch keeps the lamps on for Lego Club and a Quilting Class.

Wednesday, October 7 26 events

Wednesday is the busiest page in the week, and the most various. Jammin’ with Josh opens the morning in Babylon, West Babylon cuts Imagine & Make: Spooky Season on the Cricut, and the Amityville Chamber takes its October meeting at noon. At two, On Your Feet! plays the Argyle; at four, Sew With Miss Sue makes a Halloween pillow; and Bienvenidos a Bilingual PJ Storytime marks Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs through the fifteenth. Two Medicare sessions sit quietly among them — the unglamorous business that keeps a town upright.

Thursday, October 8 23 events

Thursday belongs to the children and the nearly-children. Lindenhurst opens with Boo & Boogie Zumbini, Copiague answers with Biligüe Mama Gansa, and by afternoon North Babylon has tweens at Fall Quilted Pumpkin Painting while Deer Park gathers its Autumnal Artists. Lindenhurst closes the day sensibly with a Roblox Safety Workshop, and North Babylon simply dims the lights for Movie Night.

Friday, October 9 22 events

And then Friday, which is where the month tips over. Frankenstein opens at Studio Theatre Long Island — Shelley’s creature, not the flat-headed imposter of the costume aisle — and at Tanger Outlets the Famous Food Festival unrolls for Columbus Day weekend, with The NuGroove Project playing it. Copiague runs a Child Safety ID Program in the afternoon, fitting for Fire Prevention Week, then puts on Children’s Movie and Pizza for everyone who made it through the week.
