The Long Weekend Has Arrived, and It Brought a Parade

Four days this time, because Monday is Columbus Day. A parade goes up Deer Park on Saturday, a food festival runs at Tanger from Friday to Monday, and on Sunday morning Argyle Park fills with the Beautification Society’s annual fair. The Salt Shack is holding its first Halloween parties of the season, and South Bay Cinemas has Beetlejuice and Psycho back on the big screen.

On the weather: Friday is the pick of it, sunny and 71°. Saturday clouds over but stays dry. Sunday turns wet after 2pm, with showers likely Sunday night, and Monday morning may see a few more. The outdoor events are mostly in the mornings, which helps, and the indoor options are flagged each day.

Columbus Day. It is also Indigenous Peoples’ Day, and in New York Italian Heritage Day. 🍂 This Weekend in October

Monday, October 12 goes by several names. It is the federal holiday Columbus Day. It is also observed widely as Indigenous Peoples’ Day, and in New York it is marked as Italian Heritage Day. Saturday’s parade in Deer Park is part of that weekend.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month: the Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition’s Vision of Hope Garden is still standing at Town Hall Park in Lindenhurst through October 31, with pink and teal flags. A $10 donation places a ribbon in honor or in memory of someone. National Mammography Day is next Friday, October 16.

The rest of the month’s observances are in the October guide.
